About CremationCheck

Helping families make informed decisions during difficult times.

Our Mission

CremationCheck is a free cremation services directory that helps American families compare providers and costs across all 50 states. We aggregate publicly available data from government sources, industry associations, and open databases to bring pricing transparency to an industry where information has traditionally been difficult to find.

Our goal is simple: no family should overpay for cremation services because they didn't have time to compare prices. With over 1.8 million cremations performed annually in the United States (NFDA 2025 Report), and prices ranging from $795 to over $3,600 for the same direct cremation service, access to transparent pricing data can save families thousands of dollars.

The Problem We Solve

When a loved one passes, most families must choose a cremation provider within 24-48 hours. This urgency, combined with grief, makes it extremely difficult to comparison shop. According to the FTC Funeral Rule, providers must disclose prices upon request, but few families have the time or energy to call multiple funeral homes during their most difficult moments.

CremationCheck collects this pricing and provider information in advance, so families can quickly compare options without dozens of phone calls.

What We Offer

  • Provider Directory: Over 5,000 cremation and funeral service providers across all 50 states, sourced from OpenStreetMap contributors and state licensing boards.
  • Price Transparency: Average cremation costs by state and city, derived from industry reports by the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) and the Cremation Association of North America (CANA).
  • Regulatory Information: State-by-state cremation laws, waiting periods, and legal status of alternative methods like alkaline hydrolysis and human composting, compiled from state funeral board websites and legislative records.
  • Demographic Data: Population and death statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau and the CDC National Center for Health Statistics.
  • Veterans Resources: VA National Cemetery locations from the National Cemetery Administration, where eligible veterans receive free columbarium placement.
  • Free Quote Requests: Families can request quotes from local providers at no cost and with no obligation.

Our Data Sources & Methodology

Transparency about where our data comes from is essential, especially for decisions as important as end-of-life services. Here are our primary sources:

Pricing data represents approximate state and regional averages. Actual costs vary by provider, specific services selected, and local market conditions. We always recommend requesting itemized quotes from multiple providers.

Editorial Standards

All content on CremationCheck is factual, data-driven, and sourced from authoritative institutions. We do not provide medical, legal, or financial advice. Our role is to present accurate, up-to-date information to help families make informed decisions. Content is reviewed and updated regularly as new industry data becomes available.

How We're Funded

CremationCheck is a free service for families. We generate revenue through our quote request service, which connects families with local cremation providers. Providers may pay a referral fee when a family requests a quote through our platform. This business model allows us to offer our directory and comparison tools at no cost to consumers. Provider rankings on our site are not influenced by commercial relationships.
